Fate… that four letter word, that many of us think is set in stone and make the mistake of sitting back and letting it take us for a ride.
Think about it… is it really????? Set in stone I mean? Or is it that fate is like a roadmap. As you go through life fate brings you to the turns you need to make and the obstacles you’re going to face. But it’s still your hands gripping the steering wheel. You’re the one who dexterously navigates those sharp, poorly lit corners. You’re the one who stays alert and steers clear of the nasty potholes. And it’s you who decides whether to turn left at that
beat-up mud path shortcut, or brave the long and straight highway. The choices and the resulting actions you take will determine when and how you reach your final destination. So in a sense you make your own fate!!!
The problem? Some of us forget how powerful we really are and leave everything to fate. Like a piece of wood in a stream we drift through life and go where it chooses to take us, leaving our final destination entirely in the hands of an unknown commodity. As though we are some hapless passengers in a runaway train. We forget that we could just as easily be the drivers of our own luxury vehicles! We have the power to steer to a destination of our choice.
Human beings are the only species who can mindfully make choices so that we can enrich our own lives and the lives of those who surround us. Fate is not what happens to us but what we do when something happens to us. When we take responsibility for charting our own course in life and life will take us in an entirely different direction from the one laid out for us by society and familial expectations or fate as some people would choose to call it!
Honestly, I cannot imagine living this precious life without ever taking the wheel and navigating my own course. True, it is uncomfortable in the short term, but I’d rather reach my destination skidding in sideways – Chardonnay in one hand – chocolate in the other – body thoroughly worn out, hair out of place, grinning ear from to ear than get to a place I don’t know, driven by someone I don’t trust and with people I don’t know or care about with a nagging regret that I wish I had…. After all, “Zindagi na milegi dobara” (you get to live just once). So go ahead live it up, make those mistakes, live like there’s no tomorrow, love like you’ve never been hurt, and dance like no one is watching.
True, Fate brought you here but you alone must decide where you go from here!!!
